Qatar with Kids: The Family Guide to Doha — Best Activities, Tours and Practicalities

Camels, dunes, boats and a museum shaped like a desert rose — Qatar is an easy win with children.

Qatar is one of the easiest Gulf destinations with children: everything is close, safe and largely air-conditioned, and the big experiences — camels, dunes, boats — are exactly what kids want. Here is what works by age, and the practical details parents ask us about.

The best family experiences

  1. 1 Desert safari with camel ride and sandboarding — private 4x4 for a gentle drive, free child seats.
  2. 2 Sunset dhow cruise — two calm hours, snacks, the skyline.
  3. 3 National Museum of Qatar — free under 16; the 360° films and the pearl carpet.
  4. 4 Angry Birds World and Snow Dunes at Doha Festival City (indoor).
  5. 5 Aspire Park lake and playgrounds; the Torch Tower next door.
  6. 6 Katara Beach and the Corniche's Al Bidda playground.
  7. 7 The Falcon Souq and the camel pen at Souq Waqif.
  8. 8 Camel racing at Al Shahaniya (Fri/Sat mornings, Oct–Apr) — robot jockeys delight every age.
  9. 9 Villaggio Mall's indoor gondolas and Gondolania theme park.
  10. 10 Banana Island day pass — pools, water sports, a real beach.

Camel rides are short, slow and led — the safari highlight for most children.

Practicalities

  • Prams work on the Corniche, in malls and museums; the souq's lanes are cobbled — a carrier is easier.
  • High chairs and children's menus are standard in hotels and malls; the souq is more improvised.
  • Pharmacies are everywhere and open late; hospitals are excellent.
  • Metro has family carriages; taxis do not carry child seats — book a transfer if you need one.
  • Most hotels offer connecting rooms and kids-stay-free deals; ask.

Eating with children

  • Souq Waqif: Damasca One and the cafeterias have chairs, space and quick food; shawarma is the universal child pleaser.
  • Katara's seafront grills have outdoor tables and ice cream next door.
  • Malls: every chain you know, plus play areas.
  • Hotels: kids' menus and often kids-eat-free; Friday brunches have supervised play zones.

Health and safety

Sun and heat are the only real risks: hats, SPF 50, water every 20 minutes outdoors in summer. Tap water is safe; bottled is everywhere. Pharmacies stock familiar brands; Sidra Medicine is a world-class children's hospital if ever needed. Car seats: not provided by taxis — book transfers and tours that supply them (ours are free).

Best areas to stay with children

The Pearl's serviced apartments (kitchens, pools, the boardwalk for scooters), West Bay's big hotels with kids' clubs (Four Seasons, Marriott Marquis, Sheraton's beach), or the Hilton Salwa resort an hour south-west with its water park for a resort-only stay. Souq Waqif's boutique hotels are charming but rooms are small and the lanes are cobbled for prams.
