Qatar's reputation for expense comes from its hotels and hotel bars. Almost everything else — museums, the metro, souq food, even the desert safari — is inexpensive. These are the 2026 prices we see every day, built into three realistic daily budgets.

Three daily budgets (per person, two sharing)
- Budget ($60–80): 3-star or souq guesthouse, souq and cafeteria meals, metro, free museums, one shared safari across the trip.
- Mid-range ($120–180): 4-star hotel, one restaurant meal a day, taxis, the National Museum, a dhow cruise and the safari.
- Luxury ($350+): 5-star, private tours and transfers, yacht charter, hotel-bar evenings.
Ways to save
- Visit April–May or September–October for 20–30% lower hotel rates and still-pleasant evenings.
- Eat one meal a day at the souq or Msheireb — as good as the hotels at a third of the price.
- Use the metro day pass; skip car hire in the city.
- Book tours direct with a local operator — typically 30% below marketplace prices for the same tour.
- Groups of 4+: private vehicles cost less per person than shared seats.

Tipping in Qatar
Not obligatory anywhere. Restaurants add a service charge in hotels; leaving QAR 10–20 for good service elsewhere is appreciated. Drivers and guides: QAR 20–50 per person for a good tour is generous and welcome. Porters QAR 5–10 a bag.
Money practicalities
- The riyal is pegged at QAR 3.64 to the US dollar; prices in USD convert cleanly.
- Cards (Visa/Mastercard, contactless, Apple Pay) work everywhere including the souq and taxis.
- ATMs dispense riyals; withdraw QAR 200–300 for small purchases and tips.
- Exchange counters at the airport give fair rates; there is no black market.

What is surprisingly cheap, and what is not
Cheap: the metro, museum entry, souq food, fuel, taxis over short distances, SIM cards, and — relative to Dubai — desert safaris. Not cheap: hotel bars and alcohol, hotel restaurants, imported groceries, yacht charters and anything in the week of National Day. Mid-range restaurants in Msheireb and Katara sit exactly where a European city would.
