Private vs Shared Desert Safari in Doha: Which One Should You Book?

The maths, the pace and the comfort — a straight answer on private versus shared.

Every safari we run goes to the same dunes and the same Inland Sea. The difference between shared and private is who is in the car with you, how flexible the timing is, and what you pay per head. Here is how to decide in two minutes.

The break-even is about four adults: at five or six people the private vehicle is actually cheaper per person, and you get the flexibility on top.

Private means your own vehicle and driver — not a different destination.

When private is the right call

  • Children under 6, grandparents or anyone who needs a gentler drive.
  • You want a 4 pm pickup because of a late lunch or an afternoon flight.
  • Photographers who want to stop at specific dunes and stay for blue hour.
  • A proposal, anniversary or a small celebration — we can arrange a private dinner setup.
  • Corporate guests and VIPs who expect a dedicated vehicle.

When shared is the smarter buy

  • Solo travellers and couples — you meet people and pay a third of the price.
  • Layover passengers who just want the classic experience.
  • Groups of three or fewer on a budget.

What 'shared' actually means

You share a Land Cruiser with up to five other travellers — usually two or three couples — and the convoy has two or three cars. Pickups run in a loop of Doha hotels between 14:30 and 15:00, so the first pickup waits about 25 minutes for the last. At the camp everyone mixes; in the car you are with the same group all afternoon. Most guests enjoy it; if you would rather not chat for three hours, go private.

What 'private' can include

  • A pickup time of your choosing between 06:00 and 16:00.
  • Extra stops: Sealine quad bikes, Al Wakrah souq on the way, a longer swim at the Inland Sea.
  • A gentle route for grandparents or a pregnant traveller while the driver still finds one 'big' dune for the teenagers.
  • Private dinner setup on the dunes for proposals and anniversaries (ask us — it is our favourite booking).
  • Guide in Arabic, Hindi, Urdu, French, German, Spanish or Mandarin on request.

Groups of 7 to 40

Larger parties travel as a private convoy of several Land Cruisers with a lead guide and radio contact, priced per vehicle — usually cheaper per person than shared seats and with everyone arriving at the Inland Sea together. For corporate groups we add a private camp with catering.
