The UNESCO-recognised reserve where dunes fall into the sea — and the practical way to reach it.
Khor Al Adaid — the Inland Sea — is a tidal lake in Qatar's far south-east where the Arabian Gulf pushes 15 km inland through a narrow channel and meets dunes as high as 60 metres. It is on UNESCO's tentative list, has no permanent buildings, and is reachable only across sand. That combination is exactly why it is worth the trip.

Where it is and how you get there
From Doha you drive south past Al Wakrah and Mesaieed to Sealine Beach (about an hour). The asphalt ends there. A licensed driver deflates the tyres to around 15 psi and takes you across the Mesaieed dune field for 30–45 minutes — that is the dune bashing part of any safari — until the dunes open onto the water. Every tour we run includes the round trip from your hotel.

What you can do there
- Swim or float in the calm, salty water.
- Sandboard down the dune that runs straight into the sea.
- Ride a camel along the shoreline.
- Photograph the dunes across the water, with Saudi Arabia's coast on the horizon.
- Camp overnight — a barbecue, Bedouin tent and a sky with no light pollution.
- Spot ospreys and flamingos in winter, and turtles in the channel.
What it costs
The Inland Sea is the destination of every standard desert safari, so you do not pay for it separately. A shared sunset trip is $60 (QAR 218) per adult including hotel pickup; a private vehicle is $260 (QAR 950) for up to six. Overnight camps are priced on the overnight safari page.

Rules and respect
Khor Al Adaid is a nature reserve. Take your rubbish out, do not drive on the shoreline vegetation, keep noise down around other camps, and note that the far shore is Saudi Arabian territory — boats and swimmers stay on the Qatari side. Drones need a permit from the Civil Aviation Authority.
Wildlife you might see
The reserve is on a migration route. In winter, flamingos wade the shallows and ospreys fish the channel; year-round there are dugongs offshore (rare to see), green turtles, and Arabian gazelle on the far dunes at dawn. Bring binoculars on the overnight trip — early morning is when the shoreline is busiest.
Camping rules
- Only licensed camps operate inside the reserve; wild camping is discouraged and off-road driving on the sabkha flats is prohibited.
- Fires only in designated pits; no wood collection.
- Everything that comes in goes out — including cigarette ends.
- Drones need a permit; night-time noise is limited after 11 pm.
If you have your own 4x4
Deflate to 15 psi at Sealine, never travel alone, carry a tow rope, shovel, compressor and 10 litres of water, and follow the used tracks — the sabkha (salt flat) looks solid and is not. Turn back by 4 pm unless camping. Honestly: the cost of a guided trip is less than one recovery call-out, and rental contracts void insurance the moment you leave tarmac.
FAQs
Only with a capable 4x4, deflated tyres and desert-driving experience — there are no roads for the final 40 minutes and cars get stuck daily. Rental agreements usually forbid off-road driving. A guided tour is safer and not much more expensive.
