National Museum of Qatar: Tickets, What's Inside and Why the Building Matters

Jean Nouvel's desert rose tells Qatar's story from seabed to skyline — how to see it in two hours.

The National Museum of Qatar is the building that made the world notice Doha's architecture: 539 interlocking discs, some 87 metres across, modelled on the desert rose crystal that forms in the sand south of the city. Inside, eleven galleries walk you from the formation of the peninsula to the World Cup. It is the best introduction to the country you can get in two hours.

The desert rose explained

Desert roses are gypsum crystals that grow in clusters just below the surface of salt flats south of Doha, forming interlocking 'petals'. Jean Nouvel scaled the shape up into 539 fibre-reinforced-concrete discs on a steel frame — the largest 87 metres across — so that no two facades look the same and the building casts constant shade over its own courtyards. Walk the outside before you go in; the play of discs changes every ten metres.

Plan your visit

• Book the 9 am slot — the galleries are empty for the first hour.
• The route is one-way and 1.5 km long; there are benches and a lift for every ramp.
• Jiwan (top floor) takes reservations for lunch with a harbour view; the ground-floor Café 875 is walk-in.
• The museum park and the Sheikh Abdullah palace are best at 5 pm light.
• Combine with MIA (10-minute walk along the Corniche) for a full museum day.
