Katara Cultural Village, Doha: What to See, Where to Eat and When to Go

Doha's cultural district on the beach — amphitheatre, mosques, galleries and the best sunset dinner in town.

Katara was built to be Qatar's cultural living room: an amphitheatre modelled on Greek theatres, two of the country's most beautiful mosques, galleries, an opera house and a beach, all within walking distance and free to wander. It is quiet by day and comes alive after 5 pm.

What to see

• The amphitheatre — 5,000 seats facing the Gulf; climb to the top for the view and check the events calendar for concerts.
• Katara Mosque (the Blue Mosque) — Turkish tiles in turquoise and gold by the artist who restored Istanbul's Blue Mosque.
• The Golden Masjid — a small mosque covered entirely in gold mosaic.
• Pigeon towers — the mud-brick towers with hundreds of nesting holes are the most photographed corner.
• Galleries — Katara Art Center and the Al Thuraya Planetarium.
• Katara Beach — swimming, kayaks and the Hilton's beach club.

Where to eat

21 High Street has upscale international dining; the beachfront row has Lebanese and Turkish grills with sea views; and L'wzaar seafood market lets you pick your fish. For something simple, the karak and chapati stalls near the amphitheatre are open late.

When to go

From 4 pm in winter — see the mosques in daylight, watch the sunset from the amphitheatre steps, then dinner. Festivals worth planning around: the Katara International Hunting & Falcons Exhibition (September), the Traditional Dhow Festival (November) and Ramadan nights.

The mosques up close

Katara Mosque (Masjid al-Azraq, the Blue Mosque) is by Zeynep Fadıllıoğlu, the first woman to design a mosque in Turkey; its turquoise tiles echo Iznik and Isfahan. The Golden Masjid next door is smaller and entirely mosaic. Non-Muslim visitors may enter outside prayer times with shoulders, knees and (for women) hair covered; the courtyard and exteriors are free to photograph at any time.

Katara with children

• The beach has a shallow, roped swimming area and pedalos.
• The pigeon towers and the amphitheatre's echo are a hit with small children.
• Ice cream and karak stalls along the seafront; toilets at the amphitheatre and beach.
• Katara is flat and pram-friendly; free parking under 21 High Street.

Galleries and the opera house

Katara Art Center and Building 5 host rotating exhibitions of Gulf artists (free); the Qatar Photographic Society gallery is a quiet favourite. The Katara Opera House and the Drama Theatre stage the Qatar Philharmonic and visiting companies — tickets are cheap by European standards (QAR 50–200) and the programme is on katara.net. In the courtyards, look for the mosaic mural by Egyptian artist Farouk Hosny and the giant 'Gandhi's Three Monkeys' sculpture by Subodh Gupta.

Combining Katara with The Pearl and Lusail

The three sit in a line along the coast: Katara, The Pearl (10 minutes north), Lusail (another 10). An afternoon at Katara, dinner at Porto Arabia and the Lusail light show at 9 pm is a complete evening, and it is exactly the route of our half-day northern tour.
