Doha Corniche: The 7 km Walk, Best Viewpoints and How to Do It Right

Seven kilometres of bay, skyline and dhows — the walk every visitor should do at sunset.

The Corniche is Doha's front porch: a crescent promenade curving around the bay with the old town at one end, the skyscrapers at the other and wooden dhows moored along the middle. Every city tour passes it; the best way to see it is on foot, at sunset, with a karak in hand.

Practical notes

  • The path is flat, lit and step-free; joggers use it from 5 am.
  • Water fountains and kiosks every kilometre; toilets at MIA Park and Al Bidda.
  • Cross the Corniche road at the signalled crossings — traffic is fast.
  • On National Day (18 December) the road closes for the parade; go early.

The Corniche's story

Until the 1970s this was a working shoreline of dhows and mudflats. Reclamation in the late 70s created the crescent and the road, and the government built the Sheraton — the pyramid at the northern end — as the first tower of West Bay in 1982. The Museum of Islamic Art closed the southern end in 2008. Walk it and you walk the city's timeline: old town, dhows, the 80s pyramid, the 2000s towers.

Running, cycling and events

  • The Corniche is Doha's running track — the Doha Marathon and National Sport Day (second Tuesday of February) use it.
  • Bicycles and scooters are allowed on the cycle path; rentals near Al Bidda Park.
  • Free public exercise stations every kilometre.
  • The dhow harbour's evening cruises (from $35) are the way to see the whole crescent lit.

Dawn on the Corniche

If jet lag wakes you, go at 6 am: the fishing dhows unload at the harbour, residents run and cycle the whole crescent, the towers catch the first pink light and the cafés at Al Bidda open by 7. In summer this is the only comfortable hour to walk it; in winter it is simply beautiful. The Museum of Islamic Art's café opens at 9 for breakfast with the bay in front of you.
