Qatar National Day (18 December): What Happens, Where to Watch and How to Plan Around It

Parades on the Corniche, camels in Darb Al Saai and the best fireworks of the year — the practical guide.

For ten days in mid-December, Doha turns maroon and white. Cars are decorated, Darb Al Saai fills with tents and camels, and on the 18th itself the Corniche closes for a military parade followed by the year's biggest fireworks. If you are here, plan around it; if you can choose, come for it.

What happens

• Darb Al Saai (from around 8 December) — a heritage festival in Umm Salal with camel and horse shows, falconry, traditional crafts, food and evening concerts; free.
• 18 December, morning — the parade on the Corniche: military bands, cavalry, camels, flyovers; roads close from early morning.
• 18 December, evening — fireworks over the bay from about 8 pm, visible from the whole Corniche, MIA Park, Katara and The Pearl.
• Katara and Souq Waqif — performances and pop-up markets throughout the week.
• Decorated-car parades on the Corniche after the fireworks — a Qatari tradition.

Planning around it

• Roads around the Corniche close from 5 am on the 18th; use the metro (Al Bidda and National Museum stations).
• Hotels run at peak rates; book early or stay at Lusail/The Pearl and metro in.
• Tours run as normal on the 17th and 19th; on the 18th we run the desert safari and evening dhow only.
• Souq Waqif is packed after 6 pm on the 18th — go for the atmosphere, eat elsewhere.

Darb Al Saai in detail

The festival's name means 'the courier's path' — the route Sheikh Jassim's messengers rode. For ten days a site in Umm Salal fills with heritage tents: Bedouin cooking, falconry shows, camel and Arabian horse displays, traditional games, poetry and evening concerts, with a big fireworks finale. It is free, family-friendly, and best from 4 pm. Take the metro to Lusail QNB and the shuttle, or a taxi.

The rest of December

• Early December: Doha Film Festival at Katara and Msheireb.
• Mid-December: Darb Al Saai, National Day, school holidays begin.
• Late December: Lusail Winter Wonderland at full swing, New Year's Eve fireworks at Katara, The Pearl and Lusail.
• Weather: 20–25°C days, 14–17°C nights — perfect for the desert.

For visitors who are here by chance

Do not fight the crowds. Watch the parade from the Corniche if you are up early, otherwise spend the day at the National Museum and Katara (both open, both festive), take the metro back to Al Bidda Park for the fireworks at 8, and eat late — the souq will be open until 2 am.

What's open on the 18th

Museums and Katara are open with special programmes; malls open from noon; the souq opens around 4 pm and runs until 2 am; banks and government offices are closed. Hotels run full; restaurants take bookings. Tours: the desert safari and the evening dhow run, the city tour does not (roads).
