The airline's own tours are convenient; a private guide is flexible. Here is how they compare on price and time.
If you fly Qatar Airways you will be offered a stopover package or a transit tour during booking. They are good products. So is booking a private tour with a local company. The right choice depends on your hours, your group and how much you value flexibility — here is a fair comparison.

When the airline package wins
- Multi-night stopovers: the discounted hotel rates are genuinely good.
- Solo travellers who want zero planning.
- Very short layovers where a fixed loop is all that fits.
When a private tour wins
- Families and groups of 3+ — a private car costs less per person than four coach seats.
- Anyone who wants the desert on a layover.
- Travellers with special interests (architecture, photography, food) or mobility needs.
- Layovers on Friday mornings, when the fixed loops hit a closed souq.
What the airline packages include
Qatar Airways' stopover packages bundle one to four nights at partner hotels (from around $14 a night on promotional fares at 4-star properties, more for 5-star), sometimes with a city tour voucher. Discover Qatar's transit tours are 3–4 hour coach loops from the airport for layovers of 5+ hours, bookable online up to 24 hours before. Both are reliable; the tours are large-group and fixed-route.
Combine them
The smartest approach for a multi-night stopover is often to take the airline's hotel deal and book the tours privately: you get the discounted room and a private safari or city tour timed to you. For a single layover under 12 hours, the airline package rarely applies and a private tour is the better fit.
Price check (2 adults, 8-hour layover)
| Option | Approx. total |
|---|---|
| Airline transit city tour × 2 | $140–160 |
| Private layover city tour (per person from $70) | $140 |
| Private layover desert safari (shared seats) | $120 |
| Private layover desert safari (own 4x4) | $260 — cheaper than 4 airline seats |
Booking a private tour: how it works
Send your two flight numbers on WhatsApp or the plan form. We check the layover length, confirm visa-free status for your nationality, propose a route with a hard 'back at departures by' time and quote in USD or QAR. Pay by card online or on the day; the driver is at arrivals with a name board and your onward flight is tracked throughout. If your inbound is delayed, the plan shrinks automatically; if it is cancelled, you are refunded in full.
