The best airport in the world, explained — where to sleep, shower, eat and how to get out of it.
Hamad International has been voted the world's best airport more than once, and if you are transiting for a few hours it earns it. If you are leaving it, the ways into Doha are simple. This guide covers both.

- Lamp Bear — Urs Fischer's 7-metre yellow bear at the heart of the concourse; the meeting point.
- Al Mourjan Business Lounge (the Garden and the original) — free for business class, or from QAR 350 for paid entry.
- Oryx Airport Hotel — rooms by the hour, a 25-metre pool, gym and spa; day passes for the pool and showers.
- Vitality wellbeing centre — showers, sauna, squash courts.
- Quiet rooms with recliners in concourses B and D, free.
- Kids' play areas near gates A and C.
- Duty free — Qatar Duty Free is large; prices on perfume are competitive, electronics less so.
Eat
Harrods Tea Room and Gordon Ramsay's plane food are the headliners; for value, the food court by the Orchard and the shawarma at Al Mansour. A karak at any café is QAR 5–8.

- SIM cards: Ooredoo and Vodafone kiosks in arrivals; tourist packages from QAR 50.
- ATMs and currency exchange are in arrivals; cards are accepted almost everywhere in Qatar so you need little cash.
- The metro station is a 5-minute walk from arrivals, signposted; it runs 6 am to midnight (later on Fri/Sat).
Finding your way
The terminal is one building shaped like a cross: concourses A and B off the central Orchard, C at the far end, and D and E along the newer north wing. Walking from A to E takes 20 minutes; a free train links the ends. Gates for Qatar Airways' long-haul flights cluster in C and E; regional flights in A and B. Screens show 'walk time to gate' — trust them.

Shopping worth doing
- Qatar Duty Free is genuinely competitive on perfume, dates and chocolate; buy dates here if you skipped the souq.
- Electronics and watches are cheaper in the city's malls.
- The 'Doha' souvenir range near the Lamp Bear is decent for last-minute gifts.
- Pharmacies airside stock most travel medicines; prices are fair.
Departure tips
- Check-in closes 60 minutes before departure for Qatar Airways; be there 2–3 hours before.
- Security is central and usually under 15 minutes; the busiest window is 7–10 pm.
- The metro's last train from the airport is around midnight — after that, taxis or a pre-booked transfer.
- Departing at dawn? The Oryx hotel's day rooms from 2 am are cheaper than a city hotel night.
