Doha for Business Travellers: Hotels, Transport, Meeting Venues and What to Do with a Free Evening

In town for meetings? The practical guide to getting around, getting things done and one good evening.

Doha is an easy city to do business in — short distances, excellent hotels, English everywhere — provided you know the working week, book the transport and pick the right district. This is the guide our corporate clients ask for, plus what to do with the evening you inevitably have free.

Getting around

  • Airport transfer: pre-book a sedan ($35 to West Bay) — name board, flight tracking, invoice.
  • Meetings across the city: hourly chauffeur from $17/h (4 h minimum) beats taxi queues and app surges.
  • Metro: Red Line links the airport, West Bay (DECC) and Lusail in 25 minutes — fine between meetings in the same corridor.
  • Traffic: avoid 7–9 am and 4–7 pm on weekdays; allow 30 minutes for anything crossing the city then.

Meeting and event venues

  • Qatar National Convention Centre (QNCC) — 4,000-seat theatre and 40,000 m² of halls in Education City.
  • Doha Exhibition & Convention Center (DECC) — West Bay, on the metro.
  • Msheireb's Barahat and the Mandarin Oriental for boutique events.
  • Katara's opera house and amphitheatre for launches and galas.
  • Hotel ballrooms: the Sheraton, St Regis and Raffles are the largest.
  • Desert camps and dhows for team events and incentive dinners.

Etiquette in brief

  • Business dress; jackets in meetings even in summer (rooms are cold).
  • Handshakes are normal; wait for a Qatari woman to offer her hand first.
  • Accept the coffee or tea; meetings start with small talk — do not rush to the agenda.
  • Business cards in English and Arabic are appreciated; give and receive with the right hand.
  • Friday is sacred; do not schedule anything before 4 pm.

The free evening

Sunset dhow cruise from 5 pm (two hours, back in time for dinner), then Souq Waqif or Katara. With a free afternoon, the desert safari from 2.30 pm gets you back by 8. We run both with hotel pickup and can invoice your company.

Connectivity and admin

  • SIM: Ooredoo or Vodafone tourist packs at the airport (QAR 50–100, 5G everywhere); eSIMs work.
  • Business centres in every 5-star; co-working at Msheireb's M7 and Lusail's Marina Twin Towers.
  • Banks open Sunday–Thursday 7.30–13.00; ATMs everywhere.
  • Invoices: we issue VAT-free invoices in USD or QAR for transfers and events; Qatar has no VAT.

Dining a client

Hotel restaurants are the safe choice (licensed, private rooms): IDAM at MIA for a statement, Hakkasan at the St Regis, Nobu at the Four Seasons. For something with local character, Parisa in Souq Waqif or a private majlis dinner at a desert camp — the latter is the evening clients remember. Friday brunch is the informal alternative.
